Newspapers and sustainability

The contemporary concept of sustainability is comprised of perspectives from both the public and private sectors. While public policy initiatives seek to satisfy economic, social and security needs without sabotaging the natural resources and environmental quality of our world, the business perspective of sustainability strives to deliver valuable products and services in a way that decreases use of natural materials and reduces negative impacts on the environment.

As a resource for the newspaper industry, the Newspaper Association of America seeks to help member newspapers work toward sustainability, championing practices that help newspapers thrive economically while preserving and protecting the environment for future generations. This section contains the association’s environmental policy, comprehensive industry background, a glossary of environmental terms and information about forest certification programs. Members can access an environmental toolkit and other exclusive features relating to this important issue.

Newspapers and the Environment: A good story to tell

The Newspaper Association of America’s members want to be good corporate citizens. With that in mind, they have changed how they do business in ways that will have long-term benefits for the environment. Members of NAA are actively establishing new business practices to reduce their products’ impact on the environment.
