Newspaper Membership
Eligibility
NAA members represent newspapers in the United States and around the world – dailies and weeklies, community-based and nationally-focused, in large cities or small towns – that share a quality and continuity in their product. Qualifying members are newspapers that are published at least one time per week, bear 25 percent editorial content of both local and general interest, and carry a minimum of 70 percent paid circulation.
NAA newspaper membership is a corporate-level membership and dues are based on annual circulation. NAA fosters strength and unity in the industry through “Group Membership” where two or more qualifying newspapers under common ownership are required to join as a group.
All full-time employees of member newspapers benefit from the services and resources provided by NAA. International newspaper members are located outside of the United States and Canada, and dues are based on annual circulation.

Benefits
NAA protects your business interests
NAA serves as a powerful, collective voice on the industry’s behalf in Washington, fighting for – or against – legislation and regulations that have an impact on your bottom line. We provide governmental agencies and the Congress with a sophisticated, contemporary view of the media landscape that helps inform debate and decisions on a wide range of issues, including postal rates and rules reform, advertising matters, copyright protection, online privacy, and much more.
NAA helps grow your business
NAA maintains a dialogue with our industry’s key audiences. We regularly communicate the newspaper value story to advertisers, the business and trade media, Wall Street, and consumers. We coordinate executive-level meetings with thought leaders inside and outside the industry on critical issues such as paid content, intellectual property, classified advertising, and new business models.
NAA is a critical resource
The association serves as an ongoing resource for the robust exchange of information and ideas through the following resources:
NAA.org – Our website is a comprehensive repository of industry trends, data, and research that highlight newspapers’ unique strengths and positioning. The members-only area provides advertising support materials and case studies on innovative strategies and success stories, and an ABC resource center to help guide newspapers through changes in rules and reporting formats.
NAA mediaXchange – Each year NAA’s annual conference features cutting-edge programming with a focus on growing revenue and audience in today’s marketplace. Members have the opportunity to share strategies and success stories, hear from experts from inside and outside the industry, meet with key advertisers, and benefit from scores of suppliers — all in one cost-effective trip.
Webinars and online education – NAA offers webinars featuring in-house and external industry experts to share innovation and success stories for generating revenue and growing audience. Past webinars are archived and available to members.
Legal resources – NAA prepares background white papers on various legal issues such as intellectual property, independent contractors, and advertising to help members make informed decisions regarding the protection of their online content and overall business issues. The association also maintains a Web-based database of newspaper labor arbitrations, collective bargaining agreements and independent contractor cases.
Young readers and diversity – The NAA Foundation’s young-reader programs are designed to enhance student achievement through newspaper readership and appreciation of the First Amendment. The Foundation’s diversity programs are focused on helping newspapers increase readership and audience by encouraging the cultivation of a more diverse work force in the press.
PRESSTIME Update and NAA on Your Side – NAA keeps members informed through these two electronic vehicles — one weekly, the other quarterly — containing news, perspectives and insights from the industry and for the industry.
NAA LinkedIn Groups – For members only, these interactive forums provide an opportunity to access the latest developments, answer questions, and exchange ideas with colleagues around the country. The groups are free and require only a LinkedIn account.
