James K. Batten Leadership and Career Development Program

Developed for mid-level professionals (formerly known as the Breakthrough Program) by the NAA's Diversity Department, this program is a structured effort aimed at developing the next generation of newspaper industry leaders. It is based on a one-on-one partnership between mid-career and executive-level newspaper professionals who communicate regularly over a one-year period. NAA annually identified 15 newspaper executives to mentor 15 newspaper professionals of color.

The program requires a year-long commitment beginning with participation in kickoff training during NAA's Annual Convention and wrapping up at the Annual Convention the following year.
