More than 8 in 10 adults – 81 percent – took action in the past month as a result of seeing a newspaper ad, new research from the Newspaper Association of America shows. More than half made an actual purchase. “How America Shops and Spends 2013,” conducted for NAA by Frank N. Magid Associates, measures patterns of behaviors in U.S. consumers, including advertising media usage for shopping and purchasing, the role of newspaper media in purchase decisions, the use of preprints and coupons, and online shopping actions.

Although the Alliance for Audited Media’s topline data no longer serve as a barometer of the industry’s health and the total circulation numbers “do not capture the full story,” as explained by AAM, the AAM Snapshot released today quantifies the growth of digital subscriptions at individual newspapers for the six-month period ending March 31, 2013. The AAM Snapshot also gives insights into consumers’ increased willingness to pay a premium for newspaper content across platforms.

The Newspaper Association of America applauds the Senate Judiciary Committee for today passing a bill that would reform the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (S. 607), sponsored by Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah. The strong bipartisan vote reflects the importance of requiring the government, including law enforcement, to obtain a warrant from a judge based on probable cause before seeking the contents of private electronic communications and documents stored by third-party service providers.
