He was a junior high teacher for seven years, served as a school principal for four years and a curriculum consultant for the Maine Department of Education for five years. He became the statewide NIE coordinator for Maine in 1979. Abbott held several positions, all related to NIE and literacy, at the Portland (Maine) Press Herald. In 1998, Abbott was named manager of Education Programs for the Newspaper Association of America Foundation, and was later promoted to director of education programs. In 2003, he was promoted to vice president of the NAA Foundation. In his work at the Foundation, Abbott has been responsible for coordinating the NIE efforts at 950 newspapers in the United States as well as serving on the World Association of Newspapers NIE Committee.
