John F. Sturm is president and CEO of the Newspaper Association of America, the newspaper industry’s largest trade organization. NAA has more than 2,000 member newspapers in the United States and Canada, the majority of which are daily newspapers that account for almost 90 percent of U.S. daily circulation.

Prior to being named president and CEO in 1995, Sturm served four years as NAA senior vice president/public policy and general counsel. In this position, he served as the key strategist for legislative, regulatory and other issues affecting the newspaper industry.

Sturm joined NAA from CBS Inc., where he was vice president, government affairs in the CBS Washington office. Prior to his eight years with CBS, Sturm was with the National Broadcasting Co. as senior counsel in NBC's Washington office. He also served in several positions at the Federal Communications Commission, including assistant to the FCC Chairman, before entering the private sector.

Sturm is a member of the board of directors of the Advertising Council (New York City), the corporate advisory board of SOME (So Others Might Eat) in Washington, D.C., and the directors committee of the Paris-based World Association of Newspapers. Sturm is also a member of the US Chamber of Commerce’s Committee of 100 and the Key Industry Associations Committee of the American Society of Association Executives.

He has served on the boards of directors of the National Association of Broadcasters, the North American National Broadcasters Association, the American Diabetes Association, the Legal Committee of the European Broadcasting Union and the Executive Committee of the Federal Communications Bar Association.

Sturm is a past chairman of the Washington Area Affiliate of the American Diabetes Association and is a member of the District of Columbia and the Federal Communications Bar Associations. He has been admitted to the bar of several courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court.

Sturm is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and holds a law degree from Indiana University School of Law. A native of Indiana, Sturm was named a "Sagamore of the Wabash" in 1999 by former Indiana Governor Frank O’Bannon.
