NEWSPAPER CARRIERS RECOGNIZED BY THE INDUSTRY FOR KEY ROLE

Event held in conjunction with National Newspaper Week, Oct. 3-9

Vienna, Va. – The newspaper industry has designated Oct. 9 as “International Newspaper Carrier Day” as a way to recognize the hundreds of thousands of newspaper carriers who deliver more than 55 million newspapers to readers every day.

International Newspaper Carrier Day is held in conjunction with National Newspaper Week, Oct. 3-9, which is sponsored separately by the Newspaper Association Managers. National Newspaper Week materials are available electronically to newspapers across the U.S. and Canada through the Kentucky Press Association Web site.

To commemorate Carrier Day, the Newspaper Association of America has created new ads saluting their accomplishments, as well a collection of updated ads from previous years. The ads can be downloaded from NAA’s Web site at http://www.naa.org/artpage.cfm?AID=5144&SID=1086

“We salute the newspaper carriers who make delivery possible every day,” said NAA President and CEO John F. Sturm. “We appreciate the key role they play in getting newspapers to readers and we are pleased to set aside this special day for them.”

A number of former newspaper carriers have achieved national prominence in business, entertainment, politics and the press. John Wayne, Warren Buffet and Martin Luther King, Jr. are among the former carriers who are now part of the Newspaper Carrier Hall of Fame, which began in 1960 by the International Circulation Managers Association and now carried on by NAA’s Circulation Federation. For a full list of Hall of Fame members, go to http://www.naa.org/artpage.cfm?AID=1717&SID=1086.

NAA is a nonprofit organization representing the $55 billion newspaper industry and more than 2,000 newspapers in the U.S. and Canada. Most NAA members are daily newspapers, accounting for 87 percent of the U.S. daily circulation. Headquartered in Tysons Corner (Vienna, Va.), the Association focuses on six key strategic priorities that affect the newspaper industry collectively: marketing, public policy, diversity, industry development, newspaper operations and readership. Information about NAA and the industry may also be found at naa.org.
