NEWSPAPER INDUSTRY’S BEST RECOGNIZED AT MARKETING CONFERENCEAwards honor top achievers in advertising, circulation, digital and research |
Orlando, Fla. – Industry professionals attending the Newspaper Association of America’s Marketing Conference took a short break from discussing best practices today in order to recognize the brightest leaders in their profession. Awards were presented to individuals who have excelled in newspaper advertising, circulation, digital media and research.
“I would like to offer congratulations to the consummate professionals recognized as the best in their field,” said NAA President and CEO John F. Sturm. “As our medium undergoes fundamental changes, those honored today have proven their ability to adapt to challenges and prepare for the industry’s future.”
The awards include:
Circulation Federation
Circulation Sales Executive of the Year Award
This award is given to an outstanding circulation sales executive who has successfully created and implemented innovative programs and strategies to improve circulation or readership during the last two to five years. The 2008 overall winner is:
- Jeff DeLoach, vice president of circulation, The Corpus Christi (Texas) Caller-Times
2008 Circulation Sales Executive of the Year – Circulation above 75,000
- Jim Puryear, vice president of circulation, The News & Observer, Raleigh, N.C.
2008 Circulation Sales Executive of the Year – Circulation 75,000 and below
- Bill Lisser, circulation director, Post-Bulletin, Rochester, Minn.
2008 Tony Mineart Newspaper Merchandiser of the Year Awards
The 2008 Tony Mineart Newspaper Merchandiser of the Year awards honor retailers who have demonstrated a long-term cooperative effort to sell and market newspapers in their stores and who model the industry’s cutting edge approach to single-copy promotions. The 2008 winners are:
Best Local Collaborative Promotion
- Dave’s Markets, nominated by the Cleveland Plain Dealer for the Temptations promotion
Best Commemorative Retailer Promotion

Newspaper Carriers of the Year
This award was created to honor newspaper carriers for outstanding achievement within three age categories – youth (up to age 18), adult (age 19-to-54) and senior (age 55 and over). Entrants competed in local and regional-level competitions before moving on to the national level to be judged by a group of experienced and respected circulation professionals. Winners were chosen from among hundreds of nominations from around the country. The 2008 Carriers of the Year:

The award is presented to the advertiser that has most demonstrated consistent dedication, creativity, flexibility, innovation and commitment to the newspaper advertising medium. The 2008 winner is:

2008 CAMEO Award Winner
The CAMEO (Classified Advertising Manager’s Executive Order) Award is presented annually to an active classified advertising professional whose efforts on a local, regional, national or international level have had a positive impact on the newspaper classified advertising industry. The 2008 CAMEO recipient is:
- Mike Kment, director of classified advertising, Gannett Co., Inc.
Digital Media Federation
2008 Online Innovator Award
This award is the highest honor the industry presents to a digital media professional for a single year’s accomplishments and a spirit of innovation that inspires change throughout the industry. The 2008 winner is:
- Dan Shorter, president of digital media division, The Star Tribune, Minneapolis, Minn.
Display Federation
2008 Advertising Agency of the Year Award
This award is presented annually by the Display Federation to the advertising agency that has most demonstrated its consistent dedication and commitment to the newspaper advertising medium. The recipient will have demonstrated creativity, flexibility, innovation and partnership over time, as well as meeting other important criteria. The 2008 winner is:
2008 Advertising Person of the Year Award
The award is given to an advertising person who has fostered the ideals of partnership and cooperation in working with the newspaper industry. The recipient may come from newspaper advertisers or advertising agency. The 2008 winner is:
- Shawn Riegsecker, chairman and CEO, Centro, Chicago, Ill.
2008 Newspaper Advertising Partnership Award
This award is given to a newspaper advertiser for consistent dedication and commitment to newspapers. The recipient has demonstrated a concerted effort to work with newspapers to build a successful relationship, and has initiated innovative practices to grow business. The 2008 winner is:

2008 Sales and Marketing Leadership Award
This award is presented to an individual for significant and sustained excellence in serving the newspaper industry both inside and outside his or her organization in the field of advertising. The 2008 winner is:
- Leslie Giallombardo, vice president of advertising, Gannett Co., Inc., McLean, Va.
Marketing, Development and Promotion Federation
2008 Marketing Master Award
This award is the highest honor the industry presents to a daily newspaper marketing professional for a single year’s accomplishments. This year’s award goes to:
- Lisa Sullivan, vice president of marketing, Austin American-Statesman
Research Federation
2008 Research Award of Merit
This award is presented to a research professional that has made significant and sustaining contributions to newspaper research over time, either in the promotion of research’s role in newspapers or the advancement of newspaper research methodologies. The 2008 recipient is:
