Minority Fellowships

Newspaper Association of America Foundation
Minority Fellowships
Climbing the Ladder to Newspaper Management Success
January-June 2009
Deadline: December 1, 2008

The Minority Fellowship program is designed to widen opportunities for minority professionals to enter or advance in newspaper management. Newspaper executives and journalism educators are asked to nominate candidates who demonstrate managerial potential. The supervisor's recommendation plays a key role in the selection of fellows. For that reason, we suggest that all applicants work closely with their supervisors when preparing the application forms.

The fellowships cover seminar registration fees, travel, meals and hotel expenses. Recipients attend newspaper-related seminars offered by the American Press Institute, Poynter Institute, National Association of Multicultural Media Executives and other organizations.

The next application deadline for the Minority Fellowship program is December 1, 2008.

For more information about the program, contact Jeanne Fox-Alston at (571) 366-1005 or send an e-mail to jeanne.foxalston@naa.org.

November 2008

We are very proud that the Newspaper Association of America Foundation’s Minority Fellowship program celebrates its 29th anniversary this year. That translates into a long-standing commitment to advancing the careers of ethnic minority newspaper professionals throughout the United States. More than 1,000 fellowships have been awarded to newspaper personnel, many of whom now stand at the upper echelons of newspapers – evidence that this program is helping to change the face of leadership in the industry.

The program is designed to widen opportunities for ethnic minority professionals to enter or advance in newspaper management. Candidates should either be in a management position or demonstrate managerial potential. The supervisor’s recommendation plays a key role in the selection process.

From January to June 2009, the NAA Foundation will award 14 fellowships. I sincerely hope you encourage staff members of your newspaper to apply. Fellowships cover seminar registration fees, travel, meals and accommodations. Fellowships and the organizations sponsoring them are:

  • American Press Institute
    Executive Development Program
  • Asian American Journalists Association
    Executive Leadership Program
  • Maynard Institute

Please do not hesitate to call me with any questions.

Sincerely,
Jeanne Fox-Alston
