20 Under 40 - 2003 Profile: Colleen PohligPRESSTIME
By Presstime MagazineFirst Published: December 2003
Reaching the younger generation is a high priority for publishers. In the Pacific Northwest, Colleen Pohlig, assistant editorial page editor at The Seattle Times, is making it happen with NEXT, a one-page opinion forum for young people that runs each Sunday.
"Colleen has made a significant difference to the community life and public discourse of Seattle and the Puget Sound region," says James Vesley, editorial page editor.
Creating NEXT required Pohlig to review a pool of more than 400 applicants and select a team of about 30 writers, ages 17-to-25. Pohlig meets with the team monthly to discuss story ideas, debate different topics and divvy up assignments. Race, marriage, birth control, religion, politics, the draft and drugs have been featured in NEXT. Two or three stories appear each week in print and an online version found at www.seattletimes.com/next offers an expanded selection of stories.
Pohlig has worked hard to get NEXT distributed to 300 Seattle-area Newspaper In Education classrooms every Monday; it also is used as a journalism teaching tool at colleges including the University of Idaho in Moscow and the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
This past summer, Pohlig was a mentor in the Urban Journalism Workshop at Seattle University, a weeklong seminar designed to engage minority high school seniors in journalism. "I have always had a passion for involving young people and getting them psyched about newspapers," Pohlig says.
Now she is trying to integrate youth voices into the rest of the paper to better cover all generations.
