20 Under 40 - 2003PRESSTIME
By Presstime MagazineFirst Published: December 2003
WHEN we put in some dummy copy for this year's "20 Under 40" layout, the line "Ignore them at your peril" was placed on the page. While perhaps a bit dramatic, it made us think about these outstanding achievers in the newspaper business, and the many others who are out there every day building the industry's future.
Reading through the nominations that detailed the innovation, achievement and passion of each, we were continually impressed by how they strive to make their newspapers, their online sites, their workplaces and their communities better. Whether it's introducing niche products to reach underserved audiences, improving back-shop operations to streamline production or getting more newspapers into the hands of school children, these rising stars demonstrate a zest for the future of newspapers.
As it is each year, the hardest part of putting this issue together is narrowing the list to only 20 individuals. The goal of the selection process is to be representative of industry disciplines across the board, making sure there are people from operations, editorial, advertising, online, etc.
So please take note of those who are featured in the profiles that begin on the next page, and also keep an eye on the names of the nominees. Then look around your own shop and take note of your own up-and-comers. There are probably more than you realized. Nurture them, encourage them and help them help our industry grow.
