The number of citizen, non-corporate and grassroots journalism Web sites that have lasted more than one year is growing (see next post). The number of those powered by former newspaper journalists is increasing, too. Add the New Haven Independent to that list.
Founder Paul Bass covered the New Haven, Conn. area for various print publications for a quarter of a century. While on a year-long leave to write a book, Bass decided he didn’t want to return to a newsroom “sucked of its spirit,” as Bass put in it in this article, "The New Haven Independent: Community-dedicated, hyperlocal online reporting," from The Editors Weblog.
In true start-up spirit, the online-only publication has non-profit status, no central office, and stories are fact-checked by readers. On the About section of the Web site, Bass writes, “Power of the press now belongs not to those who own one, but to those who own a modem. We own a modem.”
