New Media Resolutions

It’s resolution time. (I heard that groan….)

I’d really like to hear about a few resolutions we can (and will!) actually keep – ones that don’t involve losing twenty pounds, starting to exercise or spending more quality time with the family (although I will note those are all worthy efforts).

Here are a few to get you thinking:

1. Embrace and leverage the unique characteristics of each of the media channels they operate on.

2. Develop strategies, products and platforms that will embed newspaper media as the hub of community information and communication.

3. Aggressively dismiss the doomsayers by focusing on multi-product, multi-channel innovation.  – Randy Bennett, NAA

I hope new media journalists put aside some of their risk-averse tendencies, start thinking out of the box more and push harder for innovation in ways that make their products super-relevant to their target audience. – Beth Lawton, NAA

I hope new media journalists get excited about all of the opportunities and possibilities that exist for them and the industry in the New Year and use this excitement to face the challenges ahead and use these challenges to inspire them to quickly transform -- be it thinking about innovation, embracing new technologies, and/or creating hyper-local communities.  – Carolyn Valliere, NAA

What is that you want from the online publishing, newspaper industry and digital media fields in the next year? More innovation? Culture change?

Please add your resolution to the comments section below, or e-mail me directly (beth.lawton@naa.org) and I’ll post them. And just to keep you honest, we’ll look back at these a year from now.
