I wanted to point out two more sessions from the Online News Association events today.
The first is a panel on covering tragedies, which included a student from Virginia Tech and people from Poynter, The Washington Post and SignOnSanDiego. The session include discussion about how reporters used Facebook and other Web sites and tools to cover the tragedy at Virginia Tech. The student, Austin Morton, talked about incidences where reporters acted inappropriately in efforts to get interviews (lying to get into dorms and more). The newspapers talked about coverage planning and policies.
The ONA site includes a link to the San Diego Union-Tribune’s disaster plan. The conference site will also have an article about the session later today, and I’ll add that link tonight.
In the next week or so, NAA will be releasing a case study about how The Roanoke Times, which is based very close to Virginia Tech, covered the events there.
Later today, a blogging ethics workgroup will meet with the goal of producing some sort of document or set of principles media outlets can use to guide newsroom blogging efforts. I’ll post a link to the results of that meeting late tonight.
I'm heading to a content and design workshop focusing on covering elections this afternoon, and that will be the last post for today aside from updating links tonight.
Also, please take a peek at tomorrow's schedule -- if there's something you really want me to go to, let me know!
