Newspapers Everywhere: Introducing NAA's Local News Gateway

Here’s the place for local news and information on the go. The Newspaper Association of America, as it did with newspaper and classifieds Web links, has made it easy to find local news wirelessly. The Local News Gateway shows all the wireless sites available from newspapers and gives you the right links for the device you’re using.

Phone Users
Tap in
www.lngate.com (that’s "l" as in "local"), or use your personalized Web pages to add this link to your custom wireless selections. Bookmark this link and return often as you travel. Verizon Wireless subscribers can access local news directly with Mobile Web service.

PDA Users
If you have a connected PDA, download the Local News Gateway PQA
here. Save the PQA into the Program Files/Palm/Ad-on folder on your desktop. A PQA is a Palm operating system application that will download to your Palm device the next time you synchronize. Then, find the newspaper icon on your PDA index.

Pocket PC and iPAQ Users
Go to
www.lngate.com for news optimized for the Pocket PC or iPAQ. It also has regular newspaper URLS that may be accessible from your device.

This is all part of a pilot program. (Here's more). Not all newspapers have a wireless edition yet. If no newspaper offers a wireless edition in the city or state you select, the gateway will suggest nearby and national editions suitable for your device.

A full report on NAA's Wireless Pilot project that led to the creation of the Local News Gateway called, Info To Go: Key Findings and Recommendations on Wireless Publishing, is available for purchase. Click here to order.

Pilot partners include newspapers The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the (Los Angeles) Daily News, The Arizona Republic, the Albuquerque Journal, the Star Tribune in Minneapolis, The Dallas Morning News, The Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville, the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times, The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, The Free Lance-Star in Fredericksburg, Va., The Salt Lake Tribune, Boston.com and USATODAY. com, and Wireless Experts Aether Systems of Owings Mills, MD, WindWire, Inc., of Research Triangle Park, N.C., SageMetrics of North Hollywood, CA, Sachs Communications of New York City, and NetRatings, publisher of the Nielsen//NetRatings services.
