Awards

The NAA Foundation sponsors two award competitions for newspapers producing youth content.

The first of these, The NAA Foundation's Program Excellence Award is one of the most prestigious awards given to newspapers. Begun in 1997, it is presented each year to those newspapers whose programs engage young people in newspaper production in lasting, meaningful and original ways. It identifies those newspapers that show an exceptional effort in their youth programs.

The second award competition is the Youth Editorial Alliance Content Awards. This program, begun in 1996 by the Youth Editors of America Association, is designed to recognize content written by outstanding young journalists and youth sections. Winners are announced each year at the annual NAA Foundation Young Reader Conference.

The YEA contest is open to sections for children and teens that are produced by newspapers. Entries must be submitted by the youth editor or Newspaper in Education coordinator. Scholastic and college publications are not eligible to participate.

For deadline and entry information for both of these contests, use the links below:

YEA Ambassadors

By the year 2007, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that America will be home to more than 21.3 million teens and nearly 36 million young people ages 5 to 13. Newspaper across the country are beginning to serve these teens and young people by publishing sections or content tailored especially for them, and in many cases, written by them.

The Ambassadors to the Future program has been developed to help
newspapers that want to start new sections or include youth content to
target this tough demographic, as well as to train editors who oversee
existing sections. Currently it provides this training on-site in three
areas:

  • Starting a Section
  • Managing a Young Staff
  • Recruiting a Diverse Staff.

The NAA Foundation pays travel costs for the ambassador, a trained, award-winning youth editor. The host site pays for the ambassador's meals and lodging.

For further information or to receive an application, contact Sandy Woodcock, Director, NAA Foundation, sandy.woodcock@naa.org, 571-366-1008
