Start-Up Information

If you’re ready to enter the rewarding world of youth content, YEA wants to help make your life easier. The following materials are available to offer guidance, advice and encouragement.

Getting Started: The YEA Handbook

This handbook is a must for any organization about to start a youth content program. It’s a loose-leaf binder loaded with information about the major elements involved in putting a youth content program in place at your newspaper. This material comes straight from the pros - youth editors who already work in this growing field.

The handbook includes recruitment and training tips, descriptions of typical youth sections, story ideas and suggestions, and advice for promoting your section. The handbook also includes valuable resources such as a list of scholastic press associations, a sample staff handbook, plus digests of current research into young readers and the youth market. The inclusion of YEA newsletters, brochures and support materials completes a package that gives you a complete picture of the present state of youth content.

Revised in 2004, the handbook is available at no cost. To get a copy of "Getting Started," contact Sandy Woodcock at (571) 366-1008, or sandy.woodcock@naa.org.

The Starting Point: Youth and the Law

Did you know that teen journalists bear the same legal responsibility for their work as any adult reporter or editor? Although minors are held to the same standards as other journalists, their press freedom protections may be significantly limited, depending on the context in which their work appears. This free booklet explains important legal issues in youth content.

Available for $5 per copy. To get a copy of "The Starting Point," order via this link, https://www.naa.org/forms/yjandlaw/orderform.cfm

Be sure to check out the YEA site’s Programs section, for more information on:
