Who We Are

The Newspaper Association of America (NAA) is a nonprofit organization representing the $57 billion newspaper industry and more than 2,000 newspapers in the U.S. and Canada. Most NAA members are daily newspapers, accounting for 87% of U.S. daily circulation. Membership also includes many nondaily U.S. newspapers and other newspapers published in the Western Hemisphere, Europe and the Pacific Rim. Information about NAA and the industry can be found on the AssociationŐs Web site [www.naa.org].

NAA was formed June 1, 1992, by the merger of the American Newspaper Publishers Association, the Newspaper Advertising Bureau, and five industry marketing associations: the Association of Newspaper Classified Advertising Managers, International Circulation Managers Association, International Newspaper Advertising and Marketing Executives, Newspaper Advertising Co-op Network, and the Newspaper Research Council.

NAA serves the newspaper industry and its individual members in strategic efforts to:

Retain and build advertising share in all categories and improve newspapers' sales and marketing capabilities
Advocate and communicate the views and interests of newspapers to all levels of government and support newspapers' interests in First Amendment issues
Encourage a diverse work force and reflect diversity in newspaper products
Provide research, analysis and practical guidance on long-term competitive developments in order to ensure continued revenue growth through new product and business development.
Grow readership and make newspapers a part of every consumer’s life and every advertiser’s media plan, while building renewed confidence about the industry externally and among newspaper employees.

NAA Foundation

Founded in 1961, the Newspaper Association of America Foundation is the educational and charitable arm of NAA.

It is dedicated to developing tomorrow's readers by encouraging them to acquire and value information from newspapers and other media. The Foundation achieves this objective by:

Operating programs that promote newspaper use by young people
Forming strategic alliances
Making targeted grants to leverage its resources.
Improving youth literacy through family and community initiatives.

The Foundation's programs are targeted at students in elementary school through early college. The programs emphasize the use of newspapers by young people, but also include the use of other media. Foundation programs are concentrated in three major areas:

Newspaper In Education: NAA Foundation provides training to newspapers and educators on the use of newspapers in schools; helps newspapers develop strategic plans for promoting and marketing their NIE services; and represents newspapers with a broad variety of education partners.
Newspaper Content for Youth: The Foundation serves as an information clearinghouse on youth readership initiatives by newspapers and will help newspapers plan and evaluate youth features and other content for young readers and their families.
Student Newspapering: The Foundation provides information and resources to newspapers, educators, and young people to support the publication of school newspapers.
