Newspaper in Education and Student Journalism Programs
More than 750 North American newspapers sponsor year-round Newspaper In Education programs providing newspapers to schools at reduced rates. More than 70,000 schools use newspapers as a text for learning in the classroom.
During the first full week of March, the Foundation sponsors Newspaper In Education Week to raise awareness for NIE. A special set of curriculum materials is distributed by the Foundation for use in the schools that week.
More than 500 entries from students across the United States were received by the Foundation for its contest to choose a cover for the 2000 NAA Foundation Youth Literacy tabloid. Celebrating International Literacy Day on September 8, the "Lit Tab" is an annual section developed by the Foundation to be used as an insert by newspapers, with space to add articles and advertising for local identification.
The Foundation provides information and resources to newspapers, educators and young people to support the publication of school newspapers. This includes the annual Seed Money Grants for Student Newspapers–40 grants of up to $2,500 awarded to student newspapers that are in danger of closing or have stopped publishing.
The Program Excellence Awards recognize outstanding efforts by newspapers in the areas of NIE, literacy and youth content. Entries are due early in the year and can include any outstanding accomplishment from the preceding year.
Seventy percent of newspapers regularly publish or sponsor locally produced events, articles, and/or sections for young people. To that end, the Foundation provides a headquarters and support for the Youth Editors Association of America (YEAA).
The NIE e-forum was established to provide a way for NIE professionals and others interested in Newspaper In Education to stay connected. The e-forum includes both a mailing list (Listserve) and an archive of messages on the Internet. More than 500 people are signed on.
The NAA Foundation and the Student Press Law Center of Arlington, Va., have produced "The Starting Point: Young Journalists and the Law," a comprehensive guide to the special legal and ethical issues involved when journalists are minors and when journalists interview sources who are minors.
In Support of Free Press
Thirty-four journalists were killed worldwide in 1999, and at year’s end, at least 87 journalists were held in prison, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. CPJ documented cases of press freedom violations in more than 120 countries, with China holding at least 19 reporters and editors in prison, the largest number of jailed jounalists in one country, and Turkey holding 18, the second-highest number in the world.
