Nine hundred
fifty U.S. daily newspapers sponsor year-round Newspaper In
Education programs providing newspapers to 106,000 schools at
reduced rates. Used by 381,000 teachers as a text for learning
in the classroom, NIE programs reach almost 14.5 million students
each year.
Newspaper In Education Week
During the first full week of March, the Foundation sponsors
Newspaper In Education Week to raise awareness for NIE. A special
set of curriculum materials is distributed by the Foundation
for use in the schools that week.
International Literacy Day
More than 1,000 entries from students across the United States
were received by the Foundation for its contest to choose a
cover for the 2001 NAA Foundation Youth Literacy tabloid. Celebrating
International Literacy Day on September 8, the “Lit Tab” is
an annual section developed by the Foundation to be used as
an insert by newspapers.
Seed Money Grants for Student Newspapers
The Foundation provides information and resources to newspapers,
educators and young people to support the publication of school
newspapers. This includes the annual Seed Money Grants for Student
Newspapers—40 grants of up to $2,500 awarded to student newspapers
that are in danger of closing or have stopped publishing. |
Program
Excellence Awards
Program Excellence Awards recognize outstanding efforts by newspapers
in the areas of NIE, literacy and youth content. Entries are
due early in the year and can include any outstanding accomplishment
from the preceding year.
Youth Editorial Alliance (YEA)
Formerly the Youth Editors Association of America, YEA provides
programs, training, research and support to grow, develop and
stimulate youth content in newspapers. Now an official program
strand of NAA Foundation, YEA helps bring youth voices into
professional media and foster a diverse crop of budding journalists.
NIE E-Forum
The NIE e-forum was established to provide a way for NIE professionals
and others interested to stay connected. The e-forum includes
both a mailing list (Listserve) and an archive of messages on
the Internet. More than 700 people utilize this resource. |
