Newspaper Joint Operating Agreements

The Newspaper Preservation Act of 1970 was created to preserve a diversity of editorial opinion in communities where the market no longer supported two competing daily newspapers. Editorial operations under a Joint Operating Agreement remain separate; all other operations are combined. Listed here are the 12 JOAs with the year they expire.

1. Gannett Co. Inc., publisher of the Enquirer, announced in January of 2004 that it does not intend to renew the JOA with The E.W. Scripps Co., publisher of the Post, past the Dec. 31, 2007 expiration date.
2. Status of Seattle JOA is subject to pending litigation as of May 2004.
