NAA Foundation
The Newspaper Association of America Foundation was established to advance informed and intelligent media use by all citizens, especially young people; and to encourage them to value the people’s right to know and their right to a free and unfettered press.
Mission Statement
NAA Foundation is dedicated to developing tomorrow’s readers by encouraging them to acquire and value information from newspapers and other media. The Foundation will achieve its mission by:
- Operating programs that promote newspaper use by young people
- Forming strategic alliances
- Making targeted grants to leverage its resources
- Improving Literacy through family and community initiatives.
NAA Foundation’s programs are targeted to students in elementary school through early college. Foundation programs emphasize the use of newspapers by young people, but include the use of and facility with other media, as well. Foundation programs are concentrated in three major areas:
- NEWSPAPER IN EDUCATION: A system of cooperation in place at some 950 newspapers nationwide, in which newspapers work with schools to promote newspaper use in a variety of subject areas. NAA Foundation provides resources and training to newspapers and educators on using newspapers in schools; helps newspapers develop strategic plans for promoting and marketing their NIE services; and represents newspapers with a broad variety of education partners.
- NEWSPAPER CONTENT FOR YOUTH: Editorial content designed to attract young readers. NAA Foundation will serve as an information clearinghouse on youth readership initiatives by newspapers and will help newspapers plan and evaluate youth features and other content for young readers and their families.
- STUDENT NEWSPAPERING: Student-produced newspapers at the high, middle and elementary school levels. NAA Foundation will provide information and resources to newspapers, educators and young people to support the publication of school newspapers.
