U.S. Newspaper Recycling

Over 73 percent of all old newspapers in the United States were recovered and recycled in 2003, representing more than 9 million tons of old newspapers out of a total supply of more than 13 million tons.1

After a one-year decline in the newspaper recycling rate (due to new data that began reflecting the inclusion of newspaper inserts), the rate has once again increased. The newspaper and newsprint industries, with the help of communities, continue to make recycling a priority.

number of short tons by 1.1023.
