Newspaper in Education and Student Journalism Programs
Nine hundred fifty U.S. daily newspapers sponsor year-round Newspaper In Education programs providing newspapers to 106,000 schools at reduced rates. Used by 381,000 teachers as a text for learning in the classroom, NIE programs reach almost 14.5 million students each year.
- NEWSPAPER IN EDUCATION WEEK: During the first full week of March, the NAA Foundation sponsors Newspaper In Education Week to raise awareness for NIE. A special set of curriculum materials is distributed by the Foundation for use in the schools that week
- INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY: More than 1,000 entries from students across the United States were received by the Foundation for its contest to choose a cover for the 2004 NAA Foundation Youth Literacy tabloid. Celebrating International Literacy Day on September 8, the “Lit Tab” is an annual section developed by the NAA Foundation to be used as an insert by newspapers.
- STUDENT JOURNALISM PROGRAMS: The Foundation provides information and resources to newspapers, educators and young people in support of scholastic journalism. This includes the annual Student/Newspapers Partnership Grant Program which provides up to 20 grants of $2,500 awarded to revive or sustain student newspapers in partnership with professional newspapers.
- PROGRAM EXCELLENCE AWARDS: Program Excellence Awards recognize outstanding efforts by newspapers in the areas of NIE, literacy and youth content. Entries are due early in the year and can include any outstanding accomplishment from the preceding year.
- YOUTH EDITORIAL ALLIANCE: YEA provides programs, training and research to educate and support youth content providers and young journalists. Through these efforts it hopes to encourage youth to become lifelong news media consumers, to promote the viability of youth programs, to train young journalists for careers in the industry and serve as an information clearinghouse on youth initiatives at papers throughout the United States and the world.
- NIE E-FORUM: The NIE e-forum was established to provide a way for NIE professionals and others interested to stay connected. The e-forum includes both a mailing list (Listserv) and an archive of messages on the Internet. More than 800 people utilize this resource.
- YEA E-FORUM: The YEA e-forum was established to provide a way for youth editors and others interested in youth content to stay connected. The e-forum includes both a mailing list (Listserv) and an archive of messages on the Internet. More than 200 people utilize this resource.
