U.S. Newspaper Recycling

Almost 69% of all old newspapers in the United States were recovered and recycled in 1998, representing more than 8.8 million tons of old newspapers out of a total supply of nearly 12.8 million tons.1

The newspaper recycling rate has climbed steadily each year since 1988 when the newspaper and newsprint industries, with the help of communities, made recycling a priority.

1 These statistics are calculated on short tons. To convert to metric tons, divide the number of short tons by 1.1023.
