Web Width Survey 2006 - A Summary Several The survey is ongoing: all NAA members are urged to participate. In the meantime, these are the results to date. Survey results show that 60% of those responding now use 30# newsprint, while 33% — or 113 newspapers — have switched to lighter weight newsprint (45gm nominal).Nineteen newspapers, or 6%, are testing or are in process of switching to lighter weight newsprint.Four newspapers use 32# newsprint; one newspaper uses ultra light newsprint. Of 340 newspapers responding to the survey, 60% (or 204) are using 50” or 25” wide newsprint. Thirty newspapers, or 9%, have converted to 48”or 24” web width. Several newspapers are planning to change to the 48” width in the near future.One newspaper is using 64” wide newsprint; a few are using less than 48” wide web. Regarding page cut-off, a 22 ¾” cut is most common at 46%.Eighty-nine newspapers, or 26%, are using 22” cut-off.Eleven newspapers now are using 21” cut –off. Over all, 30# newsprint, 50” wide web and 22 ¾” cut-off is most common in the industry.However the future trend is towards lighter and smaller newspapers.
