KBA Goes to Dayton

      KBA Anilox-ColoraThe Dayton (Ohio) Daily News ordered an 81-couple KBA Anilox-Colora featuring 18 KBA Pastostar reelstands and three KF 96 jaw folders. KBA says the order is its biggest to date in the keyless web-offset area. The newspaper's new 250,000-square-foot facility, under construction, will house the 360-foot-long press; the site is 19 miles south of Dayton. The press will be operated either as three sections for 64-page broadsheet production or two sections for 96 pages. Online date: early 1999.


      Ryson Adds to Palletizer Lines

      Palletizer linesRyson International Inc. of Newport News, Va., has introduced a new and expanded line of palletizers. The line includes medium- and high-speed units for cartons, and many special-purpose palletizers for loads requiring special care in handling bundles. The palletizers are equipped with PLC controls, allowing automatic operation, programmable stacking patterns, diagnostics and smoother system integration. Ryson provides turnkey palletizing systems including installation, start-up and training.


      GATF and PIA Consolidation Approved

      The boards of directors for the Graphic Arts Technical Foundation and Print Industries of America are preparing documents to legally cement the consolidation of GATF and PIA. "Both organizations will benefit by servicing an expanded market, which will then afford GATF and PIA the opportunity to enhance the services to the industry," says GATF President George Ryan. The organizations passed separate resolutions for the merger that become final after the approval of both boards of directors. GATF is based in Pittsburgh, and PIA is in Alexandria, Va.


      ECRM Debuts Two Entries

      ECRM Inc. of Tewksbury, Mass., has introduced The Marlin, a high-speed color imagesetter designed specifically for the newspaper. Using holographic-imaging technology from ECRM's Holotek division, the Marlin boasts imaging speeds of up to 60 ipm at 1,000 dpi and automatically cuts film to size, ECRM officials say. They also announced a new Windows NT-based print-server software package called ECRM Computer-to-Film Server. CtF Server addresses workflow and system-connectivity issues that can impede system productivity, the company says.       Atex Releases New Press2Go

      Atex Media Solutions of Bedford, Mass., shipped Release 2.1 of Press2Go, Atex's pagination product that provides a link from the Atex J-11 front end to the industry-standard QuarkXPress page makeup and layout application.

      Press2Go features parallel pagination that allows a layout editor to design and create a story's geometry in QuarkXPress before or while a story is being written on the front end. It then sends information about story length and shape to the sub editor on the front end so that the story can be edited to fit the space. Release 2.1 is a maintenance release and is compliant with the newest Macintosh software, OS 8.0.


      Polaroid Acquires LAT Patents

      Polaroid Graphics Imaging of Waltham, Mass., announced that it acquired the patents for Laser Ablation Transfer technology originally held by Rexam Coated Films and Papers. The combination of the LAT technology and Polaroid's award-winning Fiber Laser are the foundation of Polaroid's new PolaProof Digital Halftone Color Proofing System, which had its North American launch in September.
