Returning an injured employee to work may take as little as a $200 investment in off-the-shelf software, she argued during a Monday session.

PREVENTING WORKPLACE VIOLENCE:
MORE THAN JUST SECURITY

During a Monday Health & Safety segment session, Judy Kruiswyk, employee development and safety manager at The Spokesman-Review in Spokane, Wash., recalled a 1996 bombing at the newspaper that was detected moments before explosion. Security measures and other cutting-edge technologies can help prevent incidents of workplace violence, but they only go so far, she cautioned attendees.

BEHAVIORAL SAFETY

After implementing behaviorial safety programs -- which empower and encourage workers and supervisors to take ownership of safety efforts -- Newsday managers were inspired when workers pointed out more than 100 areas where changes were needed to keep the workplace safe. It was a sign they were taking the efforts seriously, he says.

Allen Key, vice president of operations for Times Community Newspapers in Leesburg, Va., kicked off Monday’s "OSHA’s Listening" session by telling the story of his newspaper’s painful experience with the government agency.

BEST PRACTICES WINNER

On the first day of the SuperConference, The San Diego Union-Tribune was recognized for an improved safety program that slashed lost-time injuries and reduced workers compensation premiums by more than half. David M. Ferguson won a TechNews Best Practices Award for the program, which includes consultation with doctors to create modified work plans and departmental committees.
