Peter Bernhard, formerly president of MediaNews Technologies, was named vice president of business development for its parent company, Denver-based MediaNews Group.

Gerald Crawford was named vice president of operations for the Albuquerque (N.M.) Journal’s ABQJournal.com site. Donn Friedman was named assistant managing editor.

Peter Conti Jr., formerly general manager of Landmark Communications’ richmond.com, was named director of interactive media for Media General Inc. of Richmond, Va.

John Granatino was named vice president of news and operations for Dallas-based Belo Interactive.

Mireille Grangenois was named general manager of The Sun in Baltimore’s SunSpot Web site.

Eric Grilly, formerly vice president of interactive media for The Denver Post, was named vice president of interactive media for MediaNews Group.

Daniel A. Jauernig was named president and chief executive officer of Chicago-based newspaper-classified conglomerate Classified Ventures. He succeeds David G. Israel, who left the company last fall.

Karim Meddahi was named interim chief information officer of New York Times Digital. He succeeds Edward Hanapole, who left for IBM.

John Mellott, formerly general manager of the Atlanta Journal and Constitution, was named vice president of business development for corporate parent Cox Enterprises Inc.

Russell J. Nicolosi, formerly vice president of Gannett Co.’s New Jersey newspaper group, was named vice president of technology and pre-press for Knight-Ridder’s Philadelphia Newspapers Inc.

Hilary Schneider, formerly Tribune Interactive senior vice president/general manager and Times Mirror Interactive president, was named chief executive officer of Red Herring Communications.

Carol Sholes was named vice president of technology at The Sun in Baltimore.

Vendors

Howard Finberg, formerly vice president of technology and Internet investments for Central Newspapers Inc., was named to Minneapolis-based print-to-Web developer Jumptech’s board of directors.

Nancy M. Faunce was named chief operating officer of Atex Media Solutions of Bedford, Mass.

Jeff Gapp was named national sales director for JazShak, an Internet-hosting service developed by Baseview Products Inc. of Ann Arbor, Mich.

Kevin Joyce was named president of Creo-Scitex Americas of Bedford, Mass.

Gary Moore, founder and president of newspaper training and strategic planning company Insight Edge, has been named chief executive officer of Pentawave Inc. of Scottsdale, Ariz. He follows founder David Frenkel, who moves to an advisory position.

Cliff Panczyk was named branch manager of Superior Printing Ink Co.’s Addison, Ill., facility.

Larry Roessler was named Northeastern sales manager by Mactive Inc. of Melbourne, Fla.

Awards

Chris Jennewein, vice president of operations for KnightRidder.com of San Jose, won KnightRidder’s Byron B. Harless Award for his work establishing online operations at KR papers. Linda Paris, telecommunications manager for Philadelphia Newspapers Inc., won KR’s technology innovation award for implementing an automated missed-delivery system. Linda Jacobson, pre-press operations manager for the Grand Forks (N.D.) Herald, and Paul Keese, production director for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, both won KR general excellence awards.
