News Distribution Standard

Walter R. Baranger of The New York Times' News Technology Office announced at Friday's lunch that a new international standard for news distribution is being developed by NAA and the International Press Telecommunications Council.

The new format is based on Standard Generalized Markup Language, which is designed to allow the same information to be used by different media. For example, text prepared by wire services could be used by newspapers for either printed products or on-line services without substantial reformatting. The new standard will eventually replace the current text format used by the world's wire services.
