From archiving to zoning, NEXPO®'95 had it all: a veritable smorgasbord of equipment and conferences to satisfy any technology-lover's palate. Some 353 exhibitors packed 218,500 square feet of exhibit space in Atlanta's Georgia World Congress Center, while 96 speakers and moderators entertained and informed audiences in 20 sessions, symposiums and workshops.
Attendance, however, was down slightly from last year's exposition in Las Vegas. The proximity of this year's show to DRUPA'95, the European techno-banquet that happens only once every five years, may have had an impact. Most people, however, blamed a subject that has been catching a lot of blame recently--the soaring price of newsprint.
Ironically, those who stayed home missed out on a symposium, vendor exhibits and a new NAA publication filled with ideas on saving newsprint. They also missed what may have been the show's biggest news--NAA's decision to kick off two task forces to study the possible effects of reducing the size of Standard Advertising Units, which would enable newspapers to further cut their web widths, but might also send shock waves through newsprint suppliers and advertisers, and affect newspaper quality.
