AM Graphics, now known as Sheridan Systems, highlighted its Newspaper Cell Controller, the Inserter Control Node and the PC Inserter Controller. Also featured were the PRIMA Mailroom Integration system, the NP200 Press Gripper Conveyor and the NP630 Inserter.
Cannon Equipment displayed its Easy-Lock Cart and NCL Series II Cart Loader, both recently installed at The Plain Dealer in Cleveland.
Electric Machine Control Inc. showed its Elec-trol Newspaper Distribution System, recently installed at The Birmingham News. The system handles order tracking and keeps tabs on what products each truck needs, what trucks are being loaded, what trucks are available for loading and what trucks have completed loading.
Ferag Inc. introduced its latest Rollpack technology, which eliminates conventional bundles by processing assembled products into rolls ready for distribution. The company's new Rondo product is a buffering device consisting of two separately driven, helical storage lines. Ferag also introduced Rollflat, which extracts newspapers destined for postal distribution from the copy stream and processes them as single copies.
GMA made news with its SLS-2000 and Alphaliner inserting systems. The SLS-2000 has a 40,000 copies-per-hour mechanical speed, can be configured with up to 40 feeders, offers simplified mechanics for lower machine maintenance and greater availability, an ergonomic design and wrenchless adjustments. The Alphaliner checks in at 15,000 copies per hour, features a modular design for easy expansion and is offered in configurations of two to 30 stations.
Ovalstrapping Inc. exhibited the JP-40 NS strapping machine, which straps up to 35 bundles per minute; and the Accuwrap 75 three-quarter wrapper, which wraps up to 35 bundles per minute.
Power Strap debuted its NewsTyer 2000 strapping system, which can strap up to 41 bundles per minute, and a new ink-jet printer with three print heads that can print up to 12 lines.
Quipp Systems displayed its Twin trak stream conveyor, a Series 350 Stacker, a Hall Dual Carrier Stacker, a Cobra three-quarter wrapper including ink-jet printing and side walls, two Quipp-strap NS45 machines, a Prim Hall hopper loader and a flat-belt conveyor with control system.
Videojet Systems International Inc. displayed its Cheshire 4000 Imaging System, a noncontact ink-jet printing system that allows bar-code imaging, addressing, labeling, and custom messages and logos.
An HV-3 Automatic Guided Vehicle patiently rolled back and forth through the display area of the Jervis B. Webb Co., feeling its way around a corner using non-wire inertial navigation technology. Similar equipment is being used to automate the insert storage and retrieval system at The Boston Globe's Westwood, Mass., facility. Jervis B. Webb also exhibited its Basis NP control-system software, designed specifically for newspaper mailrooms.
