This coming Feb. 6-8, the Palacio de Congresos in Granada, Spain, will host the second NAA/IFRA joint conference for newspaper publishers and operations executives worldwide. "Newspaper Operations Around the World---Solving Common Problems" will include two full days of presentations and panel discussions on operational issues faced by newspapers around the globe. The last joint conference, held February 1995 in Orlando, Fla., attracted 200 participants from 24 countries.
Uzal Martz, president and publisher of the Pottsville Republican and current NAA chairman, and José Maria Bergareche, director general of Bilbao Editorial S.A. and former IFRA president, head a roster of expert speakers from both sides of the Atlantic.
The program will begin with an overview of how newspapers' traditional strengths can be leveraged to take advantage of alternate distribution channels. Later sessions will explain the effects of advertising quality on profitability, editorial content on readership, and political changes in the United States and Europe on newspaper operations. Other presenters will summarize the operational and economic benefits to be gained from emerging technologies such as digital-ad transmission and computer-to-plate systems. The conference will also include panel discussions on topics ranging from new media to new printing-press technologies. The program will conclude by exploring possible sources of fiber for newsprint and methods to reduce newsprint consumption. A welcome reception on Tuesday evening, and a reception and dinner at Cármen de los Mártires on Wednesday evening, will complement the daily sessions.
