Over the past few months I've been more of an editpreneur than an editor, donning my promotional hat as TechNews launches its first annual Best Practices Awards.

I gave minicommercials for the awards at NAA's Technical Committee meeting in January and at its SuperConference in March. I also sent nomination forms to operations directors across the country by broadcast fax, and we've been running the form in the magazine.

Hopefully, one of our communiqués has reached you by now, and you're familiar with the awards. If not, here are the basics:

• There will be five awards corresponding to the five regular TechNews departments: Pre-Press, Press, Materials, Post-Press and On Site.
• Teams of employees who have implemented innovative programs or projects at NAA-member newspapers are eligible.
• The awards include $1,000 to be divided among the members of each winning team, a trophy or plaque, and coverage in the July/August issue of TechNews. The winners will be announced this June at NEXPO in Las Vegas.
• The senior staff of NAA's Technology Department will judge the nominations on the basis of creativity, quantitative results and potential to benefit the newspaper industry.
• Finally, the deadline is tax day--April 15.

I'd like to stress this last bullet. Assuming you receive this issue during the first week of April, you now have less than two weeks to enter. If you haven't already done so, please take a moment to fill out the nomination form and send it in.

You can help us help the industry through this program. And believe me, we'd like nothing better than to recognize your team's excellence with a TechNews Best Practices Award.
