Newsprint Waste Control: A Study of Leading U.S. and European Newspapers presents the results of a study sponsored by NAA and IFRA, the INCA-FIEJ Research Association. The report describes waste-control practices used by newspapers that are among the industry leaders in controlling newsprint waste. It represents the first research project jointly planned, organized, managed and funded by the two newspaper organizations.
The case-study newspapers, four from Europe and five from North America, represent different printing processes and a wide range of circulation sizes. Studied techniques and procedures were segregated into the following categories for easier reference: general, newsprint and delivery, production waste control, equipment and materials, and personnel and management.
Appendices provide supplementary waste-control and reduction information, including a sample checklist, key practices used by an additional six leading newspapers, a formula for calculating newsprint yield and additional sources of pertinent information.
