The NAA production-materials laboratory equipment has found new homes. The instruments are now located at two independent evaluation facilities: Rochester Institute of Technology's Ink and Paper Lab, which has been in the printing-materials evaluation business for 40-plus years, and Harrington's Newsprint Testing in Catharpin, Va., operated by Ed Harrington, who worked in NAA's labs for 30-plus years.
NAA had offered third-party materials evaluation services to its newspaper members for nearly 40 years. The services provided newspapers with affordable quality-assurance programs, helped locate root causes in problem materials and maintained a set of standard color news inks for the industry. Now, through the industry-wide newsprint-quality program under Ed Harrington and the individual ink and newsprint evaluations available through RIT, these services will continue.
Both laboratories bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to bear on newspapers' samples submitted for specialized, confidential evaluation. Material-sampling kits are available through both facilities so newspapers can ensure that their samples arrive uncompromised. Arrangements for sample evaluations need to be made with the facilities before the samples are submitted.
