I would like to thank TechNews and NAA for selecting Charlie Rosendale and me for your Best Practices Award for pre-press.
The front cover looked great, the article was great, and I've had lots of people call to ask how we're paginating our paper. I've made lots of great contacts through this award. Best of all I used the $500 to remodel my son's room. He is thrilled!

I don't get TechNews directly, but as systems editor, somebody usually passes me a copy. Frankly, I think it's very useful for specific projects. The sourcing is good, and it led to a road trip to a couple of newspapers mentioned in an article on pagination last year.
You cover the topics well and the breakouts that summarize the key facts make it easy to find papers that compare to yours. I like David Cole's column in particular. He is a good journalist who knows this stuff well. I also find the magazine generally interesting, although sometimes esoteric (but how can you avoid that?).
Story suggestion: How about an article on Mac clones? Despite Windows 95, newspapers are still buying lots of Macs, and in the last year I would have saved about $6,000 if I had bought clones versus the same or nearly-the-same Macs. Yet, I'm nervous. In the long run, it could be very economical, push down Apple's prices and promote improvements the way PC clones did. Our local Apple reseller has some interesting thoughts. He is distributing UMAX and Power Computing versions of the Macintosh and is not yet really recommending them.

Thanks for the story idea. We'll get right on it.--Ed.
I think TechNews is getting better and better all the time. My only suggestion: Make it available as a PDF file on your Web site. This would help to reinforce NAA's digital-ad-format activities by providing an exemplary example. This is how I get my Seybold reports, for example, and David Cole's newsletter is available this way as well.
