Avenor Inc. tried a number of different railcar loading patterns before finding one that minimized in-transit damage to rolls while allowing for quick unloading. The Boston Globe has since applied this solution to all its newsprint suppliers.
The approach is simple. On one side of the car, they start loading in both corners, while on the other side, they start in the center. Rolls are padded with air bags to avoid damage due to shifting. They then work toward the middle of the car from both sides.
Finally, a "key" of five rolls is loaded in front of the door and held in place with straps. This key is unloaded first, giving lift trucks room to maneuver without damaging rolls.
