NAA is mailing a copy of a new report, the NAA Newsprint Waste Management System, to every member newspaper. The report defines a system to track newsprint from the time it is received from the mill to the time it is sold as a finished newspaper.
"We urge you to adopt this system to monitor the use of your most precious resource," writes Eric Wolferman, NAA's senior vice president of technology, in a letter to members that accompanies the report. "Even if your newspaper is already using some or all of the waste categories outlined, implementing common categories and measurements will allow an accurate comparison of waste figures throughout the industry. It will also help you set attainable waste goals for each of your departments. You will be able to identify industry leaders and pinpoint the best practices to reduce waste. There is no doubt that our entire industry can benefit greatly from standardizing procedures in this important area.
"In the coming months, NAA will be refining its Quarterly Newsprint Waste Report to improve its readability and usefulness. Industry-wide agreement on terminology and classification is an important first step in making this information more meaningful and accurate."
