Quark Releases QXP4.0

    Quark Inc. of Denver took the wraps off QuarkXpress 4.0 for Macintosh OS-and Windows-based systems, unveiling a slate of new tools and capabilities.

    Bezier points and curve handles let users create the same type of complexdrawings that previously required separate graphics software. In addition, QXP4.0 creates and edits clipping paths, and reads existing clipping paths in TIFFand EPS files. Users will also have the ability to create a variety of textpaths and to place text along curved Bezier lines.

    QXP 4.0 includes features for long-document production and multiple-documentmanagement such as comprehensive indexing, and list and table-of-contentsgeneration. Networked corporate workgroups will be able to create a new type offile called a book, which is a collection of QXP documents that share the samestyle sheets, colors, hyphenation and justification, lists, and otherattributes.

    QXP 4.0 has beefed-up navigation and preferences controls, triggered bytabbed dialog boxes and new pop-out tools. Dialog boxes will let users accessrelated controls with a click of the tab, while combined preference controlswill let users choose a variety of settings in one window. A new 'Xtensions manager permits users to choose which 'Xtensions they want to run each time theprogram is launched.

    Users can take advantage of character-based style sheets, rely on anenhanced find/change function to change style sheets, specify text to wraparound all sides of an object in a column, and zoom to 800 percent.

    QXP 4.0 also supports cross-platform color management, usingindustry-standard ICC device profiles and the Kodak/Digital Science ColorManagement System.

    To help meet the demands faced by multilingual publishers, QXP Passport 4.0,the multiple-language version of QuarkXPress, will support 11 languages.

    QuarkXPress 4.0 will be shipped on CD-ROM only and has a suggested retailprice of $995.
