Add-On Advantages

Newspaper managers who didn't have a new press at the top of their wish list could still find ways to improve print quality at NEXPO'97. Accessories that aimed to make presses more efficient and improve print quality were very much in evidence.

For example, the Houston Chronicle is the first newspaper to purchase Western Lithotech's new Lith-X-Pozer 7SL, which exposes letterpress plates at a rate of 150 plates per hour. Western Lithotech has headquarters in St. Louis.

Jack H. Stanley, vice president of operations for the Chronicle, said he was happy to see new technology for letterpress. "It's going to help us print better, and that's really what it's all about."

    Among other press accessories:

    • Baldwin Graphic Systems, Shelton, Conn., a division of Baldwin Technology, demonstrated its new Quantum M Automatic blanket cleaner for newspaper presses. Baldwin also introduced the Model 1128 Trident web-break detector.
    • Dynaric Inc., Teaneck, N.J., exhibited a new no-pack printing blanket, the NP-21, that eliminates the need to compensate for overfeed and underfeed.
    • Fuji Hunt Photographic Chemicals Inc., Paramus, N.J., debuted its ChemPact CPF fountain concentrate system, which features small, vacuum-packed dry ingredients.
    • Newark Paperboard Products, Cedartown, Ga., featured Greensleeves, a core system consisting of a thin, totally recyclable paperboard core plus a reusable plastic sleeve insert.
    • The Servants Inc., Jasper, Ind., announced the release of its Equa-liner Alleviator web-tension system, a universally mounted roll that works off a centrally located pivot point. Sonoco Products Co., Hartsville, S.C., offered beveled-end cores that allow room for the chuck to seat properly and securely.
    • Tingue, Brown & Co., Saddle Brook, N.J., exhibited packing systems for letterpress polyfibron technologies, including its Polydraw L-2 drawsheet, Polystick underblanket and Tingue Ball Koat drawsheets.
    • Web Press Corp., Kent, Wash., exhibited its Quadra-Color, four-color C.I.C. printing unit with its own 15 hp, independent, digital vector drive.
