Few Newspapers Among Top 100 Web Sites

    How are newspapers doing relative to their competitors on the World Wide Web? Only two newspaper-hosted Web sites were among the top 100 sites during the week of Aug. 26, according to Web21, a service that ranks Web sites by the number of hits and links.

    Furthermore, neither of the ranked newspapers finished among the top 10. USA Today checked in at number 12, while The New York Times on the Web finished 85th.

    The top 10 Web sites for the week were:

    1. Netscape Corp.
    2. Yahoo and Yahooligans, Yahoo Sports and My Yahoo
    3. Microsoft Corp.
    4. AltaVista search engine
    5. Excite, Magellan and City.Net
    6. Pathfinder, Warner Bros. and CNN
    7. Sony, Sony Music, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Sony Computer Entertainment
    8. Lycos search engine and Point
    9. Infoseek search engine
    10. CNET, Search.Com, News.Com and Download.Com
