SuperConference Speakers

From QIP to Quark, keynote speakers at NAA’s 1999 Newspaper Operations SuperConference, Jan. 10-15 at the Hilton at Walt Disney World Village in Orlando, will discuss top-of-mind issues in each area of production.

Pre-Press, Jan. 10-12. Chuck Bland, Quark Inc.’s new chief operating officer—hired to revamp Quark’s operations and make customer service meet “world-class” standards—will discuss the desktop-publishing software developer’s future direction. Segment topics include color management, pagination, PDF workflow, quality, computer-to-plate technology and digital asset management.

Health and Safety, Jan. 10-12. U.S. Labor Secretary Alexis Herman has been invited to present OSHA plans and priorities for 1999, including the much-litigated Cooperative Compliance Program (TechNews, March/ April 1998, p. 29). Sessions focus on the federal ergonomics standard, zero waste generation, hazardous waste, behavior-based safety and protective equipment.

Post-press, Jan. 12-13. William Dean Singleton, vice chairman, president and CEO of MediaNews Group Inc., will discuss the Quality Insert Program, designed to provide higher preprint quality and make newspapers easier to do business with. Other topics include mailroom productivity, insert quality, simulation technologies, microzoning, training and retention.

Press and Materials, Jan. 13-15. NAA Chairman Richard D. Gottleib, president and CEO of Lee Enterprises Inc. in Davenport, Iowa, will explore the importance of high-quality printing to both the bottom line and employee satisfaction.

Sessions explore newsprint trends, production defects, web-width reduction and new press technologies.

The 36 newspapers awarded membership to the NAA/IFRA International Newspaper Color Quality Club will also be recognized (see Color Quality Club).

“As we approach the new millennium, the only thing we’re sure of is change. The SuperConference is a great opportunity to take an in-depth look at the issues facing these important areas of newspaper operations,” notes NAA Vice President of Technology Eric Wolferman.
