Ingenious Innovations

The winners of the 1999 TechNews Best Practices Awards promise to strengthen the industry

Ingenious Innovations Light BulbOne of the primary objectives of the TechNews Best Practices Awards is to publicize outstanding innovations developed by employees of NAA-member newspapers. The hope is that those innovations will be adopted by other newspapers and thereby strengthen the industry as a whole.

The winners of this year’s Best Practices Awards promise to do just that. The innovations are so good, in fact, that three already have been adopted as products by industry vendors, and a fourth might be in the near future:

  • The pin-post bushings developed by Adolph Bereki of the Orange County (Calif.) Register, the winner in the Press category, are now standard issue on Goss Graphic Systems Inc. presses.
  • The automatic offset blanket cleaner invented by Manuel Marquez of the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News, the winner in the Materials category, is being marketed by Machine Design Service Inc.
  • The production-planning module of The New York Times’ Setup and Monitoring System, the winner for Post-Press, is being marketed by GMA Inc.
  • The News-Journal of Daytona Beach, Fla. is in discussions with an undisclosed newspaper-integration supplier that wishes to market its Rapid Ad Delivery system, the winner of our Pre-Press Award.

Health & Safety

The final award, for Health & Safety, goes to the Fox Valley Press’ Production Department for its equipment safety data sheets—an innovation that other newspapers can adopt without even having to buy a product.

This year’s winners were chosen by the TechNews Board of Contributing Editors from a record 70 nominations. The winning teams each receive $1,000 and a plaque, presented at NAA’s Newspaper Operations SuperConference in Orlando. Look for the winners at the SuperConference, and for their winning innovations at an industry vendor near you.
