Drudge Holds No. 1 Spot in Sessions per User; Pittsburgh, Buffalo Join List

Data from Nielsen Online - July 2008

The Drudge Report held onto the No. 1 spot in July in monthly sessions per user among Nielsen Online’s Top 30 Current Events & Global News Destinations, slipping just slightly from last month to 20.5 sessions per user from 21.2 last month.

In the top 10, Daily Kos slipped a few places, leaving room for Fox News Digital Network to jump into the No. 2 spot. The Deseret Morning News dropped a few notches as well.

Nielsen Online provides these numbers to the Newspaper Association of America on a monthly basis, showing traffic and sessions per person* to the top 30 sites in the “News” category based on July 2008 numbers. It takes into account U.S. home and work Internet usage, and it shows both unique visitors to each brand or channel and sessions per person.

Newspapers
This month, 12 of the top 30 from Nielsen are newspaper companies, up from 10 last month. New newspaper additions to the top 30 were The Buffalo News (3.9 sessions per user) and The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (4.0 sessions per user).

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel made the biggest move this month, jumping from 23rd place to 15th. Nielsen Online reported the newspaper now has an average of 5.1 sessions per user.
Other newspaper moves on the list from last month to this month:
  • Gannett’s Newspaper Division moved down just slightly, from 13th place to 15th.
  • The Star Tribune moved up to 14th place from 15th.
  • The New York Times moved to 20th place, down four spots.
  • Media General moved up spots to 16th.
  • USAToday.com moved down to 28th from 24th.
  • The St. Louis Post-Dispatch and Cox Newspapers remained in 28th and 30th place, respectively.
* Note on the following numbers: Auto-refresh features on Web sites (i.e. when a Web site page reloads automatically) does not increase the number of sessions. For more information about the metrics, go to www.netratings.com
^ Indicates Home and Work audience duplication projections did not meet minimum sample size standards. Combined home and work audience estimates for these sites may exhibit increased variability month-to-month as a result.

The Drudge Report has gotten much better since it dropped all the gossip stuff and branched out to international coverage of news. It's quite good, I am not surprised at it being in the top spot. His dynamic choice of photos are the very best on the internet. I also think the site has improved since Mr. Drudge himself stopped writing "news".

I like the drudge, but this poll is rubbish on account the drudge report automatically reloads its web page every 2 minutes or so.

Re: Drudge Holds No. 1 Spot in Sessions per User; Pittsburgh, Buffalo Join List
How does the fact that Drudge's page is set to reload every couple of minutes, and the fact that the page loops back to itself on many headlines that have not yet been linked to stories play into these number? He seems to pad his numbers.

Re: Drudge Holds No. 1 Spot in Sessions per User; Pittsburgh, Buffalo Join List
Padded or not, Drudge outdid #2 FNC by 150%. It’s probably, due to the fact that I have checked his site, at least twice, nearly every day since 9/11.

Re: Drudge Holds No. 1 Spot in Sessions per User; Pittsburgh, Buffalo Join List
Sean and RP, A session is created when you arrive at a site and ends (usually) 20 minutes after navigating away from a page or closing a browser, therefore the page reloads have nothing to do with these numbers. In fact the page reloads would keep a session alive therefore skewing the numbers in the opposite direction as you suggest. I check drudge everytime I open my laptop.

Re: Drudge Holds No. 1 Spot in Sessions per User; Pittsburgh, Buffalo Join List
If you look above the table the article specifically states that automatic refresh does not affect the numbers........."* Note on the following numbers: Auto-refresh features on Web sites (i.e. when a Web site page reloads automatically) does not increase the number of sessions."

Sean, read the text. It says that auto-refresh features on a website doesn't affect its ratings. Hence, Drudge really is numero uno.

I check Drudge a couple of times a day because in a very concise format he covers a wide range of topics which include most of what I'm interested in.

I like drudge because for the most part they leave celebrity BS out of it and get me news. Yahoo and msn are about useless stuff that should be in a woman's magazine most the time. Just the facts ma'am.

The Drudge Report is an excellent site. I check it at least three times a day, and my seventeen year old now has it bookmarked. It's updated often and to the point. Drudge does a great job choosing relevant news.

i used to think drudge was too conservative, but compared to FAUX he's very fair I think. He does tend to "create" news when he wants to, but that's all news stations. his format is a little dated though. I prefer NEWSER.COM

I like Drudge, but he's inflating his numbers by auto refreshing his page. No other site does that (and it's extremely annoying). I have a refresh button and I know how to use it. Stop doing it for me to drive up hit counts!!

I'm pretty liberal but I still like Drudge more than any other news website. It is simply formatted and it quickly gets me the info I need to know. Other websites have too much garbage news and too many ads, I can't stand it! Go Drudge, Craig's List and Google - less is more.

Being that the Drudge Report introduces a site to so many people, I am willing to bet a link on Drudge can boost a websites numbers significantly, as is probably the case with the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel and Breitbart's site. Plus I am sure being linked on Drudge helps out that rag the New York Times numbers as well.

I like the Drudge Report but don't like the way he promotes "Breitbart" (17th on the list), who, as far as I can tell, is run by a homosexual with an apparent personal connection to Drudge. Breitbart does nothing more than publish news feeds from Agency Press (APF). He's an aggregator who provides no original content. He's useless.

Maybe his numbers are down slightly because someone is actively trying to drive them down a few weeks ago he dissappeared off my google homepage sites to go to and was mysteriously replaced with drudge retort when I searced in google gadgets for him he was no longer there. also when you search google for drudge you get all the other off the wall sites, but I guess i am addicted, i changed my home page to drudge instead of google since they appeared to be making it hard for me to go directly to his page

Drudge is convenient to skim headlines- however, Digg dot com is far more accurate, reliable and democratic. Drudge leans waaay to far to the right to be considered unbiased- but when I am in a hurry- drudge is a quick way to skim headlines and nothing more.

Re: Drudge Holds No. 1 Spot in Sessions per User; Pittsburgh, Buffalo Join List
From drudge.com:
VISITS TO DRUDGE 8/21/08

023,003,374 IN PAST 24 HOURS
574,817,771 IN PAST 31 DAYS
6,168,917,086 IN PAST YEAR

That is where he inflates his numbers.
He counts the page re-fresh as a "visit"

If you look at the Nielsen numbers..
he really only has 3,254,000 unique visitors
that on average visit 20.5 times per day.
That is 66,707,000 sessions.

How he comes up with 574,817,771:
on average - each person has the site auto refresh
8.2 times before leaving.

The real numbers that mean anything are unique
visitors. Unique visitors are different people from
different computers.

If we take the Nielsen numbers based on the
total number of people who visit a site..
we get a different view.

1) MSNBC Digital Network - 37,516,000
2) Yahoo! News - 35,225,000
3) CNN Digital Network - 32,977,000
4) AOL News - 22,010,000
5) NYTimes.com - 19,513,000
6) Gannett - 13,254,000
7) Fox News Channel - 11,540,000
8) Google News - 10,776,000
9) USAToday.com - 10,404,000
10) WorldNow - 9,070
11) Hearst Newspapers - 8,225,000

and on and on... till you get to Drudge
with his 3,254,000 unique visitors.

Drudge doesn't make the top ten.

Another way to look at it is..
34,262,000 more individuals go to MSNBC that to drudge.

Just to clarify -- this is on sessions per person, which is *not* affected by the numbers of times a page refreshes.

"Addicted" is an interesting choice of words. I guess people are "semi-addicted" to Fox News then? Sounds like a little jealousy seeping into the scene. Good headlines, way faster than anyboby else around, equals the only place to fnd out what's going on in this world. Who would've thunk it? (geez)
